What began as a dream with our grandfather has grown into a legacy, passed down through generations, with each family member contributing their unique talents to honor our shared values of craftsmanship, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
Our Family Story
Our journey began in 1963 with Edward Mitchell (Grandfather, 87), who fell in love with the dazzling brilliance of Australian opals while working as a miner in Coober Pedy. Captivated by their fiery hues and unique patterns, Edward envisioned sharing the treasures of the earth with the world. His hands-on approach to opal mining and deep respect for the land laid the foundation for what would become True Opal Origins.
In 1969, Lizzy Mitchell (Grandmother, 72) joined Edward in his work, bringing her artistic vision and a keen eye for design. Lizzy’s dedication to crafting one-of-a-kind, handcrafted jewelry transformed raw opals into wearable works of art, elevating True Opal Origins from a small family operation into a beloved name across Australia and beyond. Her legacy continues to inspire every facet of our work.
A New Generation
Their son, Daniel Mitchell (Father, 51), embraced the family tradition in his twenties, combining his expertise in environmental science and business acumen to modernize opal mining and jewelry-making practices. Under Daniel’s leadership, True Opal Origins has grown into a brand synonymous with innovation and tradition, sharing the timeless beauty of Australian opals with customers worldwide.
In 2020, Amelia Mitchell (Daughter, 28) became the newest member of the family business. Armed with a degree in sustainable design and a deep commitment to preserving the environment, Amelia brings a fresh perspective to True Opal Origins. Her contemporary designs and eco-conscious approach ensure the company honors Australia’s natural treasures while adapting to the values of a modern world.
